About: Waverley Flora Park is a 75-hectare bushland reserve on Hobart’s eastern shore, known for its high plant diversity in a compact area and strong spring wildflower and orchid displays. The park contains a mosaic of grassy woodland, dry eucalypt forest, and rocky slopes, supporting rich biodiversity including several threatened flora species such as the tailed spider-orchid, alongside a wide range of native grasses and wildflowers. This field trip focuses on Tasmanian native orchids, surveying species in flower across grassy openings, track edges, and sheltered woodland patches. Depending on conditions, we may encounter: Greenhood orchids (Pterostylis spp.), Sun orchids (Thelymitra spp.), Diuris (donkey / tiger orchids), Spider orchids (Caladenia spp.), other spring wildflowers and early flowering herbs. The reserve is managed by the City of Clarence and is actively maintained for both conservation and recreation, including walking tracks, habitat restoration, and weed management.
