Date: Sunday 10th May 2026

Place: Pipeline Track, from Neika (at the intersection of Huon Rd and Morphetts Rd)

Time: 9:45am for a 10.00am start

Travel time: Approx. 15-20 mins from Hobart GPO. From Hobart, head west via Davey Street (A6) towards Huon Rd, passing through Fern Tree and continuing on to Nieka. Park at Neika near the Huon Rd / Morphetts Rd intersection, opposite the Pipeline Track Road Access point.

About: The Pipeline Track follows Hobart’s historic 1860s water supply route, originally built to transport water from Wellington Rivulet and later the North West Bay River to the city. Its gentle gradient and wide surface reflect its original purpose: allowing workers and horses to access the pipeline for maintenance. On this walk, we will skip the first 4 km (which begin at Fern Tree) and instead start at the Neika trailhead. You will walk through tall stringybark and messmate eucalyptus forest, see tree ferns (i.e. Dicksonia antartica), myrtle and sassafras, and a diverse understory. This section of the track is particularly rich in birdlife. You might also see some interesting fungi. The track and surrounding reserve are managed by the Wellington Park Management Trust, with on-ground maintenance by the City of Hobart. For more information, go to Pipeline Track – TasTrails.com.
