ABOUT: Join Craig Broadfield for an illustrated look at the remarkable orchids of Tasmania’s Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area.
The Arthur–Pieman Conservation Area supports a remarkably diverse orchid flora, ranging from tiny, easily overlooked terrestrial species to colourful sun orchids, spider orchids and donkey orchids.
In this presentation, Craig Broadfield will explore some of the orchids found across this wild north-western landscape, drawing on many years of field observation survey and monitoring. The talk will look at their habitats, flowering seasons, unusual forms and variations, together with some of the challenges involved in finding and identifying species in the field.
The talk will also explore how rainfall, fire and other environmental factors influence orchid populations, and what long-term observation can reveal about these fascinating and often highly localised plants.
